Homily

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

MATTHEW 11:25-30

“come to me …. I will give you rest”

Today, as we gather to celebrate the life of our departed loved one, we find solace and hope in the words of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew. In this passage, Jesus speaks of the invitation he extends to all who are burdened and weary, offering them rest and comfort.

We are reminded that our departed loved one, like all of us, experienced the burdens and weariness of life. They faced challenges, sorrows, and struggles, just as we do. But now, in the arms of our loving Savior, they find the rest and peace that they longed for.

Jesus, in his infinite mercy, assures us that he is the source of true rest and comfort. He invites us to come to him, to lay our burdens at his feet, and to find solace in his loving embrace. He promises to give us rest, to lighten our load, and to provide us with the strength we need to carry on.

As we reflect on these words, we are reminded of the compassion and love that our departed loved one showed to others during their time on earth. They lived a life of service, reaching out to those in need, offering a helping hand, and bringing comfort to the afflicted. They understood the importance of showing mercy and kindness to others, recognizing that in doing so, they were serving Christ himself.

In the Gospel passage, Jesus speaks of the Father’s mercy and his own mission to bring consolation and salvation to all. Our departed loved one, in their acts of love and service, reflected this mission. They were a living testament to the mercy and compassion of Christ, bringing hope and healing to those they encountered.

Today, as we bid farewell to our beloved, let us take comfort in the knowledge that they now rest in the loving arms of our Savior. Let us also be inspired by their example of love and service, and strive to follow in their footsteps. May we, like them, be instruments of God’s mercy and love in the world, bringing comfort and solace to those who are burdened and weary.

In this time of grief, let us find strength in the words of Jesus, who promises to give rest to all who come to him. May we find solace in his loving embrace and may our departed loved one find eternal peace in his presence.

May the Lord bless and comfort each one of us as we mourn the loss of our beloved. May he grant us the grace to continue their legacy of love and service, and may he bring us all to the eternal rest that awaits us in his kingdom. Amen.
