Seeing Clearly… Choosing to Follow

During these days of Lent, the Church invites us to listen more carefully to the voice of Jesus. In today’s Gospel, He speaks very plainly—no parables, no hidden meanings—telling us exactly who He is. When Jesus says, “My Father is at work… and I am at work,” He is not simply talking about God; He is claiming to share in the very work of God. Those listening understood this clearly, which is why they reacted so strongly. Jesus is not just a teacher or a prophet—He is one with the Father. Everything He does is what the Father does. The life the Father gives, He gives. The authority the Father has, He possesses. This is why He can say that all must honor the Son just as they honor the Father.

This Gospel forces a decision. Jesus does not leave us the option of seeing Him as merely a good man or wise teacher. Either He is who He says He is, or He is not—and if He is, then everything changes. His words become deeply personal: “Whoever hears my word and believes… has eternal life.” Not someday, but now. Eternal life begins in this moment—in how we see, how we live, and how we love. At the same time, Jesus speaks with honesty about the reality of judgment. There are two paths: one that leads to life and one that leads to condemnation. Our choices matter. Our response to Him matters.

So the question this Gospel places before us is not just whether we understand Jesus, but whether we truly believe Him—and not just with words, but with our lives. If Jesus is truly one with the Father, then listening to Him is not optional and following Him is not occasional—it becomes everything. During this season of Lent, we are invited to ask for the grace to see Him more clearly, to trust Him more deeply, and to follow Him more completely. Because the One who speaks to us today is not just offering advice—He is offering life. And the choice before us is simple: not whether we will listen, but whether we will follow.
