Prayer Helps Us See

Over these Sundays of Lent we are reflecting on something very important in our spiritual lives: prayer. We are remembering one simple truth—prayer is how our relationship with God grows. Last week we reflected on how prayer begins as a simple conversation with God. Today the Gospel shows us something else prayer does for us. Prayer helps us see—not just with our eyes, but with our hearts.

In today’s Gospel we hear the story of a man born blind. For his entire life he had never seen the world around him. Then Jesus enters his life, and everything begins to change. Yet the deeper meaning of this Gospel is not only about physical sight. It is about spiritual sight. As the story unfolds, the man’s understanding of Jesus grows. At first he simply calls Jesus “a man.” Later he calls Him “a prophet.” By the end of the story he says, “Lord, I believe.” His sight grows gradually, and that is exactly how prayer works in our lives.

Prayer slowly opens our eyes and helps us see life differently. In the first reading we hear that God does not see as human beings see. We tend to focus on appearances, but God looks at the heart. Through prayer we begin to see more the way God sees. Prayer gradually teaches us patience and compassion. Instead of seeing people only for their faults or mistakes, we begin to recognize that they too are loved by God and are struggling in their own ways.

Prayer also changes the way we see the situations in our lives. What once looked like only a burden may slowly become an opportunity to trust God more deeply. What once looked like a failure may become a moment when God is teaching us something important. Prayer even changes the way we see ourselves. Instead of seeing only our weaknesses, we begin to realize that God is still at work in us, shaping us and calling us to grow.

Without prayer, life can remain spiritually blurry. We move quickly through our days, reacting to situations without seeing the deeper reality of God’s presence. Prayer brings light. It allows us to see life, others, and ourselves in the light of Christ.

During this Lenten series we are discovering different ways prayer shapes our lives. Last week we saw that prayer begins with a conversation with God. This week we see that prayer opens our eyes. Next week we will see something even deeper—that prayer helps us trust God even in the difficult moments of life.

This week try a simple prayer. At some point during the day pause and say, “Lord, help me see today the way you see.” Ask God to help you see the people around you with compassion and to recognize where He is present in your life. Prayer slowly opens our eyes because prayer is how our relationship with God grows.
