First Sunday of Lent
A Journey of Transformation and Grace
As we gather today on this First Sunday of Lent, we’re reminded of the journey ahead of us—a journey that invites us to reflect, to grow, and to deepen our relationship with God. Lent is not just about giving something up; it’s about taking a step closer to the heart of God.
In our readings today, we start with the story from Genesis. God created humanity from the dust and breathed life into us. This is powerful! We are not just random beings; we are crafted with intention and love. But then we see the fall—the moment when Adam and Eve chose to listen to temptation rather than to God. This story isn’t just ancient history; it’s a reflection of our own lives. Each of us faces choices every day. We can choose to follow what is good, what is true, or we can get caught up in what seems easier or more appealing in the moment.
In Romans, Paul reminds us that through one person, sin entered the world, but through another, grace and righteousness came. This is where the good news shines! No matter how many times we stumble or fall, God’s grace is always there, waiting to lift us up. Lent is a time to acknowledge our shortcomings, but it’s also a time to embrace the incredible gift of forgiveness and new beginnings.
Then we turn to the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus, after fasting for forty days, faces temptation. Notice that He doesn’t just brush it off; He engages with it. He responds to each temptation with Scripture, grounding Himself in God’s word. This is a powerful lesson for us. We all face temptations—whether it’s the temptation to gossip, to be selfish, or to stray from our values. But what if, instead of trying to fight these battles alone, we turn to Scripture or prayer? What if we let God’s word be our guide?
As we embark on this Lenten journey, I encourage each of you to think about what you can do to grow closer to God. Maybe it’s setting aside time for prayer, reading Scripture, or even serving others. Lent is about transformation, and transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process, much like a seed growing into a tree. It takes time, nurturing, and sometimes even struggle.
For the young ones among us, think of Lent as a training ground. Just like athletes prepare for a big game, we can prepare our hearts for Easter. And for those of you who’ve walked this path many times before, remember that each year is a fresh opportunity to deepen your faith.
So, as we move through these forty days, let’s embrace the challenges and the growth that come with them. Let’s be real with ourselves and with God. Let’s acknowledge our weaknesses, but more importantly, let’s lean into His strength. Together, let’s make this Lent a time of renewal, a time to draw closer to the love of God that is always there, waiting for us to take that step forward.
