Wednesday of the Second Week of Advent

“Come to Me: The Rest We’re All Searching For”

When Jesus says to us today, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest,” He’s speaking right into the world we live in — a world that tires us in ways people long ago never imagined. And that’s the beauty of His invitation. He isn’t calling the perfect or the strong. He’s calling the tired, the overwhelmed, the ones who feel life pressing down on them. In other words… He’s calling most of us.

One of the heaviest burdens people carry today is the constant pressure to keep up — to do more, be more, achieve more. Our world moves so quickly that if we’re not always producing something, we feel like we’re falling behind. Another burden, and one that Jesus would surely speak to if He walked among us today, is the overload of information and communication. We are surrounded by screens, notifications, social media feeds, and breaking news every few minutes. We’re connected to everyone and everything… except sometimes the people right in front of us. Our minds rarely get quiet. And into that noise Jesus says, “Come to me.” Not “stay updated,” not “scroll a little more,” not “compare yourself to everyone else.” Just, “Come to me.”

Many people also carry the burden of loneliness — a quiet ache beneath the surface. Even with all our digital connection, many feel unseen or unknown. Jesus’ invitation is incredibly personal: He wants to meet us there. And then there’s the burden of shame or guilt — things from the past we drag along with us. Those things can exhaust the soul more than anything else, and Jesus wants to free us from them.

When Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,” He’s talking about the way two animals were yoked together to walk side by side. The stronger one carried most of the weight. Jesus isn’t giving us another task or demand. He’s offering a relationship where He carries the part that’s too heavy for us. His yoke is not pressure — it’s presence.

It reminds me of the famous line from St. Augustine:
“You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
We often try to rest in distraction, in entertainment, in our phones, in constant noise… but none of that restores the soul. Only Jesus does.

So if the Lord were standing right in front of you today — and in the Eucharist, He truly is — and He asked, “What’s weighing you down? What can I carry for you?” …what would you tell Him? Is it anxiety? Is it the pressure to keep up? Is it the noise of social media and the constant comparisons? Is it loneliness? Is it something in your past? Whatever it is, Jesus isn’t here to scold you for being tired. He’s here to give you rest.

This Advent, let’s take Him at His word. Let’s step away from the noise, even just a few minutes each day, and come to Him. Let Him carry the burdens we were never meant to shoulder alone. And in that quiet, in that turning toward Him, we might finally discover the peace our hearts have been longing for.
