The Widow’s Gift and the Martyrs’ Witness: Trusting God with Everything

Today’s Gospel from Luke 21:1-4 presents us with the humble and powerful image of the poor widow. While the wealthy give from their abundance, this woman gives from her poverty — not just something, but everything. Jesus sees the heart behind the gift and praises her, saying, ‘This poor widow has put in more than all of them.’

Her offering is not measured by its monetary value, but by the depth of her trust and love for God. It is a complete surrender, a quiet act of faith that echoes through the ages.

On this same day, the Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint Andrew Dũng-Lạc and his companions, the Vietnamese martyrs. Like the widow, they gave everything — not just their possessions, but their very lives — out of love for Christ. Their witness reminds us that the most valuable gift we can offer to God is ourselves, even in the face of suffering, persecution, or death.

Saint John Chrysostom once said, ‘The value of a gift is not in its amount, but in the intention of the giver.’ Both the widow and the martyrs gave with hearts full of faith. The widow trusted God with her livelihood; the martyrs trusted Him with their lives.

We may not be called to martyrdom, but we are all called to give — to offer our time, our love, our forgiveness, our resources — not just when it is easy, but especially when it costs us something. The measure of our generosity is not in what we give, but in what we hold back.

Let us ask for the grace to give like the widow and to witness like the martyrs — with hearts fully surrendered to God, trusting that He will provide all we need. May their example inspire us to live our faith with courage, humility, and love.
