Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

Led by Angels, Living Like Children

Today we celebrate the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels — a beautiful reminder of God’s intimate care for each one of us. In today’s Gospel from Matthew 18:1-5,10, Jesus places a child in the midst of His disciples and says, ‘Unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ He then goes on to say, ‘See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.’

This passage is not merely about humility and childlike trust — although that is central — but it also reveals something astonishing about our spiritual companions: the holy angels. Each of us has been assigned a guardian angel from birth. Not just a comforting idea but a truth rooted in Scripture and Tradition.

Saint Basil the Great, one of the Fathers of the Church, wrote: ‘Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.’ What a profound mystery! Each of us is never alone — not even in our darkest hours. Our guardian angels are not abstract symbols but real spiritual beings who know us, guide us, and intercede for us before the throne of God.

Jesus reminds us not to despise or overlook the little ones because their guardian angels are in constant communion with God. This raises our awareness that every person, especially the vulnerable, carries a dignity that is protected and honored in heaven. So often in our world, people are forgotten, neglected, or discarded. But heaven does not forget — the angels do not forget.

Let this celebration awaken in us a deeper trust in divine providence. Let us also learn from the humility of the child, from the quiet obedience of the angels, and from the ever-present love of God who did not leave us to walk alone.

Today, thank your guardian angel. Speak to him as to a friend. Entrust to him your fears, your temptations, and your mission. And remember: wherever you go, you are accompanied by a holy presence that reflects the love and attention of your Heavenly Father.

May we, like the angels, always gaze toward God and serve Him by lovingly caring for others.
