Standing with Mary at the Foot of the Cross

Today, as we honor the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Church invites us to stand spiritually at the foot of the Cross, contemplating the Gospel passage from John 19:25-27. In this brief but powerful moment, we witness the depth of Mary’s love and the sorrow she bore.

The Gospel tells us, ‘Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother…’ She was there, standing—not collapsing in despair, not fleeing in fear, but standing in faith and love. This image should move every Christian heart: the Mother of God, who bore Him in her womb, now shares in the agony of His Passion, not by shedding His blood, but by shedding her heart’s tears.

At that moment, Jesus, in His final acts of love, entrusts His beloved disciple to His mother, and His mother to His disciple: ‘Woman, behold your son.’ ‘Behold, your mother.’ In this solemn exchange, the Church is born. Mary becomes not only the mother of Jesus, but our mother too. She accompanies each of us just as she accompanied Jesus, especially in our trials and sorrows.

Saint John Chrysostom once said, ‘He who is devout to the Mother of God will certainly never perish.’ The Fathers of the Church understood that Mary’s role did not end with the birth of Jesus; it began a deeper dimension as she became a model of courage in suffering and the spiritual mother of all believers.

When we reflect on her sorrows—especially as she watched her Son die—we come to see that Mary understands fully the suffering of every mother, every father, every person who grieves and struggles to find hope. And yet, even in her deepest sorrow, she remained faithful. Her suffering was not in vain; it was united with her Son’s, offered in love for the salvation of the world.

Let us take refuge in the heart of Our Lady of Sorrows. Let us bring to her all our griefs, knowing that she stands beside us, just as she stood at the foot of the Cross. With Mary as our companion, we are never alone in our suffering. She guides us gently to Jesus, who transforms sorrow into joy and death into life.

Our Lady of Sorrows, intercede for us, that like you, we may remain steadfast under the cross and find our hope in Christ.
