Rooted in Christ: Bearing Good Fruit and Building on Solid Rock

Today, as we celebrate the Memorial of Saint John Chrysostom, we are invited to reflect on the powerful words of the Gospel according to Luke 6:43-49. In this passage, Jesus uses the imagery of trees and foundations to teach us a profound lesson about the nature of true discipleship.

Jesus says, ‘A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.’ He is reminding us that our actions stem from the condition of our hearts. Just as a tree is known by the fruit it produces, so too are we known by the way we live, speak, and love. If our hearts are rooted in Christ, the fruits of our lives will reflect that, producing kindness, mercy, patience, and truth.

Saint John Chrysostom lived this truth with passion and courage. His name, which means ‘Golden-mouthed,’ reflects not only his eloquent preaching but also the purity and conviction of his heart. He was a man who loved the Word of God deeply and proclaimed it boldly, often facing opposition and exile for the sake of the truth. Yet he remained steadfast, building his life not on the shifting sands of public opinion or personal comfort, but on the rock-solid foundation of Christ.

Jesus concludes the gospel with a clear image: two builders—one who builds on rock and another on sand. When the storms come, only the house built on solid rock endures. The storms in our lives are real—trials, temptations, sufferings, uncertainties—but if we base our lives on Christ, turning to Him in prayer, living by His Word, and following His commandments, we will withstand the storm.

Saint John Chrysostom challenges us today: Are we only listeners of the Word or true builders who put it into practice? Do our daily actions reflect the Gospel we profess? Faith is not simply agreeing with Jesus in words; it means aligning our entire life with His.

Let us, then, ask for the intercession of Saint John Chrysostom, that like him, we may speak the truth with courage, live the Gospel with conviction, and bear good fruit that honors God and brings life to those around us.

May our hearts be rooted in Christ, so that no matter what storms we face, our lives may stand firm in Him.
