Seeing Clearly Through the Eyes of Mary

Today we are blessed to reflect on two beautiful and complementary themes: the Gospel from Luke 6:39-42 and the Feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Individually, each carries deep meaning, yet together they speak powerfully to our call to humility, self-awareness, and trust in God’s guiding light.

In the Gospel, Jesus uses striking imagery to caution us against hypocrisy. He says, ‘Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?’ He urges us to first remove the plank from our own eyes before we presume to help others with the speck in theirs. This is a call not only to humility but to inner conversion—a reminder that we must allow God to heal and purify our own lives before we can truly be lights to those around us.

Now, on this special feast day, we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary by celebrating her most holy name. The name ‘Mary’ is dear to every Christian heart. It is a name that carries grace, purity, and maternal love. The Church recognizes in her not only the Mother of our Lord but also our model in discipleship. What is notable about Mary is her humility—her quiet obedience to the will of God, her self-emptying love, and her readiness to serve. She embodies precisely the opposite of what Jesus warns against in today’s Gospel.

While the scribes and Pharisees sought to correct others while remaining blind to their own pride, Mary lived in the light, attentive to every word from God. She bore Christ not only in her womb but in her heart. Hers was a life of clear vision because her gaze was always fixed on God.

So today, as we listen to Jesus’ call for sincerity in our spiritual lives, we ask ourselves: Are we quick to judge others while failing to see our own faults? Do we seek to guide the lives of those around us while neglecting the condition of our own soul? The Blessed Virgin Mary shows us the better way—a life surrendered in trust, open to God’s leading, and lived in humble service.

Let us invoke her holy name with reverence, trusting in her intercession to help us become more like her Son. May her name be a comfort in our trials, a strength in our weakness, and a guide when our vision is cloudy. Let us, like Mary, reflect the light of Christ in a world that so often walks in darkness.
