Called to Compassion: The Prayer and Mission of a Disciple

Today, as we celebrate the memorial of St. Peter Claver, the Gospel reading from Luke 6:12-19 offers us a powerful image of Jesus in prayer and in action. Jesus spends the night in prayer to God, and then He chooses the twelve apostles. After that, He descends to be among the people—teaching, healing, and drawing all to Himself. What stands out here is the profound rhythm of contemplation and mission in Jesus’ life: prayer that leads to action, communion with the Father that overflows into compassion for others.

St. Peter Claver lived that same rhythm. A Jesuit missionary in 17th-century Colombia, he dedicated his life to the service of enslaved Africans who were brought to the Americas in cruel and inhumane conditions. Inspired by a deep love for Christ, he saw in the suffering of those men, women, and children the very wounds of Jesus. He did not shy away from their pain or degrade them as so many others did. Instead, he met them in their need, brought them comfort, taught them the Gospel, and through his own hands, the healing touch of Christ reached so many.

How fitting that the Gospel today shows crowds pressing to touch Jesus, seeking healing from their afflictions. In his time and place, Peter Claver became that visible sign of Christ’s healing power. Known as the ‘Slave of the Slaves,’ he touched lives not just physically but spiritually—bringing dignity where there was none, sacrificing comfort for compassion, and enduring misunderstanding for the sake of love.

From Jesus’ night in prayer to His outreach among the suffering, we learn the source of all mission: a heart that listens deeply to God and a life that responds generously to others. St. Peter Claver challenges us to do the same. He reminds us not to close our eyes to the suffering at the margins of our world. Whether they are poor, oppressed, discriminated against, or simply forgotten—Christ calls us to be near them, to touch them with mercy and truth.

Let us ask ourselves today: where is the Gospel calling me to serve with greater compassion? How can I bridge the gap between prayer and action in my own life, as Jesus did, as Peter Claver did? May the life of this holy saint inspire us to love with courage, serve without counting the cost, and always see Christ in the ones who suffer.
