Feeding the Flock with Love: The Legacy of Saint Pius X

As we gather to celebrate the memorial of Saint Pius X, the Gospel given to us today from John 21:15-17 offers a profound reflection on love, forgiveness, and the mission entrusted to those who follow Jesus. In those moving words spoken by Jesus to Peter — ‘Do you love me? Feed my sheep’ — we find the very essence of Christian leadership and service.

Jesus does not ask Peter about his abilities, his plans, or his wisdom. He asks simply, ‘Do you love me?’ And from that love, Jesus gives Peter a mission: to tend and to feed the flock, to care for others with the heart of Christ.

Saint Pius X was a pastor who answered that same question with the whole of his life. Born Giuseppe Sarto, he never forgot his humble beginnings. That humility shaped his priesthood and later his papacy. He believed that the role of the pope was first and foremost to be a shepherd — not a ruler in worldly terms, but a servant who feeds and guides Christ’s flock.

Perhaps the most important reason we honor Pope Pius X with this special memorial is his deep commitment to drawing all people into a closer relationship with Jesus, especially through the Eucharist. He is known primarily for his great efforts to promote frequent reception of Holy Communion and for lowering the age for First Holy Communion from 12 to 14 to 7 so that even young children could experience the grace of receiving Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

His famous motto was ‘To restore all things in Christ.’ He worked to bring the Church closer to Christ — renewing its worship, deepening its doctrine, and purifying its discipline. He reorganized seminaries to better form holy priests. He improved catechesis for the faithful. Every action he took was rooted in his deep love for Christ and his desire that others would come to know and love Him more deeply.

As we remember Saint Pius X today, we are challenged by the same question Jesus asked Peter: ‘Do you love me?’ Each of us is called to respond, not just with words but with actions. If we love Him, we too must tend His sheep — in our families, our parishes, our workplaces. We feed His sheep when we speak truth, show mercy, pursue justice, and above all, when we bring others to the Eucharist with faith and reverence.

May the legacy and teachings of Pope Saint Pius X inspire us to be faithful and courageous in our love for Christ. Let us learn from his example how to seek holiness in humble, daily service and to always lead others to the heart of Jesus, especially in the Holy Eucharist.Saint Pius X, pray for us. Amen.
