Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Assumed into Glory: Mary’s Triumph and Our Hope

Today we come together as the Church to celebrate a feast that holds deep spiritual meaning for all of us: the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this solemn day, we honor the truth that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.

This feast is not simply about a miraculous event, but about a profound hope and promise for each of us. Mary’s Assumption is a sign of what God desires for all His faithful children. She, the first and most perfect disciple of Christ, was taken up to heaven to be with her Son forever—not as a ghost, but with her whole being, body and soul. In doing so, God honors her humility, her faith, and her total openness to His will.

Mary’s life was one of deep surrender. When the angel Gabriel announced to her that she would be the mother of the Savior, she responded not with fear or hesitation, but with the words, ‘Let it be done to me according to your word.’ This attitude of trust and obedience continued throughout her life—from the stable in Bethlehem to the foot of the Cross. And now, in heaven, Mary continues to be our mother, interceding for us with love and compassion.

The Assumption also reminds us of our own future. It tells us that our bodies matter—that our lives and actions here and now are important, and that we too are called to eternal life with God. Mary’s glorification gives us a glimpse of what awaits those who remain faithful: the fullness of life in God’s presence. It is a feast of joy, of hope, and of renewal. It assures us that death is not the end, but a transformation into glory.

But if Mary is already in heaven, it is not so that she may be distant from us. On the contrary, she remains close to each of us, guiding us to follow her Son ever more faithfully. She is our model, our helper, and our heavenly mother. When difficulties arise, when we feel lost or alone, we can turn to her. She knows our struggles, and she never stops praying for us.

Let us then, on this feast day, renew our trust in Mary’s maternal care. Let us imitate her example—her purity, her humility, her faithfulness—and entrust our lives to God’s plan, as she did. And let us rejoice, for where Mary has gone, we too hope to follow, clothed in the glory of the resurrection, and united forever with Christ, our life and our salvation.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, assumed into heaven, always intercede for us and lead us closer to Jesus.
