Memorial of St. John Bosco

Today we come together to celebrate the memorial of Saint John Bosco, a beloved figure in the Catholic Church known for his dedication to helping and educating young people. Born in 1815 in Italy, John Bosco grew up in poverty but was inspired by a dream in which he was called to be a shepherd caring for the souls of young people. He went on to found the Salesian order, dedicated to the education and welfare of disadvantaged youth, and his work continues to impact countless lives around the world.

We celebrate the feast of Saint John Bosco not only to honor his life and legacy but also to draw inspiration from his example of selfless service and love for God. In the readings from Hebrews 10:32-39 and Mark 4:26-34, we are reminded of the importance of faith, perseverance, and the growth of God’s Kingdom.

The passage from Hebrews encourages us to remember the trials and challenges we have faced in our faith journey, just as Saint John Bosco faced difficulties in his mission to help and educate young people. Despite obstacles, he remained steadfast in his faith and trust in God, leading by example and inspiring others to follow Christ.

In the Gospel of Mark, we hear about the Kingdom of God being like a mustard seed, starting small but growing into something great. Saint John Bosco understood the significance of planting seeds of faith and love in the hearts of young people, nurturing them to grow into strong and faithful followers of Christ.

As we reflect on the life of Saint John Bosco and the readings for today, let us be encouraged to persevere in our faith, trusting in God’s promises and planting seeds of love and compassion wherever we go. Let us follow in the footsteps of Saint John Bosco, dedicating ourselves to the service of others and the growth of God’s Kingdom here on earth. May his example inspire us to be instruments of God’s love and mercy in the world today.
