Memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas
January 28, 2025
On this memorial of Saint Thomas Aquinas, let us reflect on the wisdom and legacy of this great theologian and Doctor of the Church. Today’s readings from Hebrews and Mark remind us of the importance of faith, sacrifice, and spiritual family – themes that resonated deeply with the life and teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
Saint Thomas Aquinas, born in Italy in the 13th century, was a Dominican friar, philosopher, and theologian known for his comprehensive synthesis of faith and reason. His most famous work, the Summa Theologica, continues to be a cornerstone of Catholic theology and philosophy. Saint Thomas believed that faith and reason were not in conflict, but rather complemented one another in our pursuit of understanding God’s mysteries.
In the letter to the Hebrews, we are reminded of the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for the salvation of all. Saint Thomas Aquinas deeply pondered the mystery of Christ’s sacrifice and sought to help others grasp its profound significance. He emphasized the importance of Christ’s sacrifice as the source of our sanctification and redemption.
In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus teaches us about the value of spiritual family. When He declares, “Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother,” He invites us into a deeper relationship with Him and with one another. Saint Thomas Aquinas understood the importance of unity and community within the Church, recognizing that our common bond as believers is doing the will of God.
As we honor Saint Thomas Aquinas today, let us follow his example of seeking wisdom and understanding in our faith. Let us strive to integrate faith and reason in our pursuit of truth and deepen our relationship with God and one another. May we be inspired by his legacy to live as one spiritual family, united in Christ and His will.
