Thursday of the 1st week of Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel reading from the Gospel of Mark tells us about the powerful healing encounter between Jesus and a leper. In this story, we witness the mercy and compassion of our Lord as he reaches out to touch and heal someone who was considered untouchable and outcast in society.

Leprosy was not only a physical ailment but also a social stigma in ancient times. Those suffering from leprosy were marginalized, forced to live apart from others, and were seen as unclean. Yet, in the midst of this isolation and rejection, the leper in today’s Gospel displayed great faith and humility as he approached Jesus with a simple plea: “If you wish, you can make me clean.”

Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out his hand, touched the leper, and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” In that moment, the man was healed, cleansed of his affliction, and restored to his community. This powerful encounter shows us that Jesus is not afraid to reach out to those who are marginalized or considered untouchable by society. He shows us that no one is beyond the reach of his love and mercy.

As we reflect on this Gospel passage, let us remember that we are all in need of healing in some way, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Just as the leper humbly approached Jesus with faith, let us also approach the Lord with open hearts and trust in his healing power.

May we be like the leper who, after being healed, could not help but go out and proclaim the good news of Jesus’ healing touch. Let us also be witnesses to God’s mercy and love in our own lives and help bring healing and reconciliation to those who are in need.

Let us pray for the grace to have faith like the leper, courage to approach Jesus with our needs, and a heart open to receive the healing and mercy that only Christ can offer. May we be ever grateful for the gift of God’s love and may we strive to share that love with all whom we encounter.
